Here are a few of our favorite farmers. Come back again to meet more!
Satur Farms (www.saturfarms.com) Satur Farms, owned by chef Eberhard Müller and his wife Paulette Satur, is dedicated to growing the finest vegetables and culinary ingredients. It began when they purchased their original farm on the North Fork of Long Island in 1997, with the intention of growing some vegetables and herbs for Chef Müller's restaurant. Colleagues in New York City asked if they might be able to buy their produce, and the farm as a business became a reality. Satur Farms grows specialty salads, leafy vegetables, heirloom tomatoes, root vegetables, and herbs. They are committed to farming according to organic standards, although not certified organic, and believe it produces better flavor profiles and assures a healthy, pesticide-free choice that is better for people and the planet.
Plainville Farm (www.plainvillefarms.com) Located in the rolling hills of Central New York, Plainville Farms grows its turkeys in an animal friendly environment and without the use of antibiotics. They use only the finest vegetarian feed free of any animal by-products. Their all natural turkey is the secret ingredient of our delicious kid-friendly meatloaf!
Flying Pigs Farm (www.flyingpigsfarm.com). At Flying Pigs Farm, rare heritage breeds, like Large Black, Gloucestershire Old Spot and Tamworth pigs are fed a wholesome diet of grains, veggies, grass and fruits. There are no animal by-products in the food that these pigs eat. The pigs roam in the fields and woods of the farm, enjoying fresh air and sunshine throughout the seasons. They are never crowded indoors, in artificially lit steel pens, the way factory farmed animals are. This method of raising pigs ensures healthy, clean, delicious meat and a protected water supply around the farm and throughout our region. Flying Pigs is located in the Battenkill River Valley, in Shushan, New York.
Hawthorne Valley Farm (www.hawthornevalleyfarm.org). Hawthorne Valley Farm is a diversified biodynamic farm, located in Ghent, New York. Hawthorne Valley practices biodynamic farming—a method that uses composts enriched with herbal tonics to enhance soil fertility, crop rotation to keep soil vibrant and to minimize pests without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Hawthorne produces grass-fed meats, tasty cheeses and yogurts, and a variety of delicious garden veggies.
